
DeWitt began her stage show at age 13. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree at Ball State University. The director encouraged her to join UCLA's Department of Theater MFA program. In the program, she was awarded the Master of Fine Arts Fellowship along with the Clifton Webb Scholarship. Dewitt said she never met the actor Abe Vigoda while she was at UCLA. She was employed as an assistant secretary while at UCLA. The role she played by DeWitt as Janet Wood in Three's Company's 1977-84 series is among her most well-known. She was chosen to play the show's pilot and was eventually offered the role. She also portrayed Janet in an episode from 1979 on the spinoff show The Ropers. DeWitt was the only actor to appear in the series' 1984 finale. She also appeared in an episode of Finder of Lost Lovers in 1984. Then she was off acting for many years. She returned to acting, taking participation in an production of Noises Off at Michigan's Cherry County Playhouse in June 1991. In the following year she was a part of the TV comedy Spring Fling! Pinky and the Brain featured a character that was modeled after her voice by another actress in 1997. The actress was also featured in an episode Cybill. The 2000s work of her includes TV shows such as Hope Island, The Nick at Nite Holiday Special and Call of the Wild.
