Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian was born in Canada but grew up in the U.S. She has worked as an editor since the year 1995. Feminist Frequency is a site with video and an online blog analysing portrayals female characters in popular culture. Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian-American blogger and media critic that has received prizes for her work, is an activist blogger. Feminist Frequency examines the way women are depicted in popular culture. Destroying stereotypes about women are the main goals of her work. However, Sarkeesian also highlights issues related to specific harassment of women on the internet and other minorities that are marginalized. Sarkeesian is a graduate in social and political thinking at York University. As a public speaker, she's well-known and has been a speaker at TEDxWomenXOXO and the United Nations Broadband Working Group. She was fascinated by the gender issue and feminist movements since a young time. In 2009, when she was still studying at university, she created the Feminist Frequency site. A woman with ambitions to create a web series that examined the representation of gender in video games, she was targeted by an internet-based campaign. This attack didn't stop her, rather it strengthened her determination as an activist for women in media. Many awards have been presented to her in recognition of her contributions to the field she made. Anita Sarkeesian, a media journalist who has received many awards, and also founded Feminist Frequency, an educational non-profit that examines the ways women are depicted within popular culture narratives.
